He marries Marie\u2011Josephte Des Chavigny.<br>Their children continue the family line in New France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf3e 1774 \u2014 Fran\u00e7ois Desgroseilliers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in the Ch\u00e2teauguay region of Quebec.<br>Marries Catherine Reid.<br>This generation anchors the family in the parishes of Ch\u00e2teauguay, Sainte\u2011Martine, and Beauharnois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udfe1 Early 1800s \u2014 Joachim Desgroseillers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Son of Fran\u00e7ois and Catherine.<br>Marries Genevi\u00e8ve Rochon.<br>As they move to english speaking regions,their children stop using <strong>Desgroseilliers<\/strong> and start using the Anglicize <strong>Grozelle<\/strong> name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udc76 1842 \u2014 Antoine Alfred des Groseilliers (Grozelle)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Ch\u00e2teauguay, Quebec.Antoine moves to Callander, Ontario.<br>Antoine marries Elenore Laroche.<br>He is your great\u2011great\u2011grandfather and the bridge between the Quebec and Ontario branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83d\udc76 1869\u2014 Antoine des Groseilliers (Grozelle)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born in Callander, Ontario, he moves to Haileybury Ontario. Marries Anne Jane Johnston. They have seven children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\ud83c\udf32 Late 1800s\u20131900s \u2014 The Grozelle Family in Ontario<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name  Grozelle becomes firmly established in Northern Ontario communities. These cities were Callander, Nipissing and now Sault Ste. Marie. Where Faye Smedley (Grozelle) is living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see we Grozelle&#8217;s are direct descendants of M\u00e9dard Chouart des Groseilliers.<br>This website is attempting to preserve and share a family story that spans four centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Alfred\u2019s generation onward, the surname appears as <strong>Grozelle<\/strong>, reflecting the common practice of English clerks simplifying French names. Working with Pierre-Esprit Radisson, he explored important waterways and contributed to the development of the North American fur trade. This section brings together images, historical information, documents, and a short timeline to introduce his life and legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Medard&#8217;s Biography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As quoted from Widipedia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>M\u00e9dard Chouart Des Groseilliers<\/strong> , born and baptized in <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charly-sur-Marne\">Charly-sur-Marne <\/a>on July 31, 1618 and died in 1696 in Trois &#8211; Rivieres. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The son of M\u00e9dard Chouart and Marie Poirier, he was raised at the farm known as &#8221;&nbsp;Les Groseilliers &nbsp;&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bassevelle\">Bassevelle<\/a> on the banks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marne_(rivi%C3%A8re)\">Marne<\/a> River . Arriving in <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nouvelle-France\">New France<\/a> in 1641, young M\u00e9dard first worked as <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donn%C3%A9_(j%C3%A9suite)\">a lay assistant<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compagnie_de_J%C3%A9sus\">Jesuit<\/a> mission of <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sainte-Marie-au-pays-des-Hurons\">Sainte-Marie-au-pays-des-Hurons<\/a> . He explored the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lac_Huron\">Lake Huron<\/a> region for ten years . He then settled in <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trois-Rivi%C3%A8res\">Trois-Rivi\u00e8res<\/a> , where he became a <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coureur_des_bois\">coureur des bois (<\/a> fur trader ). He had two children from this first marriage before becoming a widower. Only one of these children, M\u00e9dard, reached adulthood. In 1653, he married Marguerite Hayet, widow of Jean V\u00e9ron de Grandmesnil. He was the first Frenchman in New France to recognize the possibilities for fur trade around Hudson\u2019s Bay. His daring led him to explorations that were crucial for French and English territorial claims in North America; and his intelligence enabled him to see quickly and clearly that the easiest and quickest route to the richest fur region of the continent was not by the difficult, dangerous, and time-consuming canoe highway through the Great Lakes and along the Grand-Portage\u2013Lake of the Woods waterway, but across Hudson Bay in ships carrying large cargoes quickly and easily to the very heart of the continent. In addition he had the address sufficient on the one hand to assuage Indian fears of white men and on the other to persuade European officialdom and businessmen to carry out his ideas. The Hudson\u2019s Bay Company continues to this day to prove the correctness of his judgement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">In the same year, Chouart returns to Hudson\u2019s Bay.
