The marker commemorates a crude shelter made of tree boughs built by Radisson and Groseilliers during their unauthorized 1659 expedition into the Lake Superior region\u2014widely considered the first European outpost in present-day Wisconsin. Their subsequent conflicts with New France authorities over trading licenses eventually led them to seek English backing, which helped inspire the creation of the Hudson's Bay Company. Here they conceived the idea of tapping this fur-rich region from Hudson Bay. Failing to enlist French support for the scheme, they turned to England; the result was the founding of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1670. The next two decades saw the erratic Radisson alternately in the service of France and England, in Hudson Bay, Canada and the Caribbean.
