Groseilliers Descendants: Our Family History

FOLLOW THE FAMILY Time line FROM GROSEILLIERS TO FAYE SMEDLEY (GROZELLE)

Early 1600s – Medard Choate des Groseillier was born in France. He explored Canada and was an influence in the development of the fur trade and the beginning of the Hudson Bay Company. We can trace our family routes to Medard des Groseillier.

Early 1800s — Birth of Joachim Desgroseilliers
Son of François. Joachim marries Geneviève Rochon. Francois’s and Genevieve’s children move to Ontario. The payroll clerks changed the name Desgroseilliers to Grozelle. The names “Desgroseilliers” and“ Grozelle both exist today.

1842 — Birth of Antoine Alfred des Groseilliers (Grozelle)
Born in Châteauguay, Quebec. Antoine moves to Callander, Ontario. He Marries Geneviève Rochon.He marries a second time to Elenore Laroche.

1869 – Birth of Antoine Grozelle Born in Lindsay, Victora, Ontario Canada. He marries Anne Jane Johnston. They have seven children. Fredrick Louis Grozelle was my grandfather. He married Cora Lulu Farrell.

1894- Birth of Fredrick Louis Grozelle was our grandfather. He married Cora Lulu Farrell. They had 4 children. Richmond, Keith, Violet and Verne Grozelle.( Keith was Faye’s father.)

1918- Birth of Keith Percival Grozelle my father, marries Margaret Pearl Armstrong

1938- Birth of Faye Cora Louise Grozelle, marries Gordon Julian Smedley

MEET ANTOINE AND ANNE JANE GROZELLE AND their seven children

Discover the history of the Grozelle family in Haileybury, Ontario. Learn about the warm relatives and the shared household of Antoine and Anne Jane Grozelle.

As a child I lived in Haileybury, Ontario. I was fortunate to spend time with this family.

You will see me as a 5 year old in a picture showing five generations.

I have met Alfred our great, great grandfather, at his home in Haileybury and in Toronto’s St. Michael’s Hospital. It was 1958, I was on my way to start my training at the Greater Niagara School of Nursing to become a nurse. He was 98 years old. He died of cancer.

Through the years,my family visited the Grozelle family home for many get togethers. The video shows a couple of these get togethers. My mother and father, Pearl and Keith, are in one of these pictures, as adults.

There are pictures of family get-togethers that show my father Keith as a child with his siblings.

Fredrick Louis Grozelle

Their four sons are in the video with their families:

1, Cyril (Chic) who married Marg Elgins and they had one daughter – Linda

2. Percival (Percy) Married Mabel Corrine Sutherland and they had 2 Children – Betty and Bill

3. Harold never married.

4. Fredrick Louis (Fred) married Cora Farrell and they had four children – Richmond, Keith, Violet, Verne

Observe the many tasks a prospector does.

Antoine’s and Jane’s eldest son Fredrick, worked as a prospector. The video shows the many environments that he had to work in and live in. As you will see they were often tents or small cabins in the middle of the bush.

There were many pictures of his work as he would be a way from home for months at a time and to keep in contact he sent pictures.
